About the Recycling Drop-Off Center

In addition to our fast growing Ches-Mont Disposal Collection Company, we also have a Recycling Drop-Off Center at the entrance of the Western Berks Community Landfill (WBCLRC), located in Birdsboro, Pennsylvania. The Drop-off Center offers residents a place to drop off a great number of recyclable items that are not collected with their regular recycling. This service is available to all Berks County residents.

WBCLRC has been offering commingle recycling services to its patrons for over 5 years. Now, we are pleased to offer a more wide-ranging recycling service that is convenient, reliable, and open to the local communities.

We do our best to stay current on recycling news and events to ensure that your recyclables are going to the best possible source, and are handled in a way that is environmentally responsible. Thank you for your participation.

Materials

In addition to commingled recyclables, the Drop-Off Center accepts paper, cardboard, commingle, gently used clothing, batteries (car, household, rechargeable), tires, scrap metal, cell phones, electronics, appliances, waste vegetable oil, and fluorescent lights. Please see the descriptions below for more detail. Note that items with a "*" have a nominal fee for recycling.

Appliances* -

We recycle appliances—stove/ovens, washers, dryers, hot water heaters, etc. The cost per appliance is $25.00.

Batteries

We have three categories for batteries.

1) Alkaline/Household Batteries -

These batteries are typically the most common. They are NOT rechargeable.

2) Lead-Acid Batteries* -

A lead-acid (also called "Pb") battery is the kind of battery you would find in a car, lawn mower, tractor, or any kind of motorized machine. There is a $2.00 charge for each battery.

3) Rechargeable Batteries -

Nearly all rechargeable batteries are acceptable. Some examples of accepted rechargeable batteries are Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion), and Small Sealed Lead (Pb). Rechargeable batteries can found in cordless phones, PDAs, two-way radios, camcorders, remote control toys, power tools, cell phones, and in regular AAA, AA form.

Please note alkaline and regular lithium batteries are not accepted in the same box with rechargeables (see electronics). Also, because batteries have the potential to short circuit and start fires, we will not accept wet batteries.

Cardboard -

Cardboard is welcome! Please flatten all boxes and remove Styrofoam and other loose trash.

Cell Phones -

All sizes, makes, models, digital and analog cell phones are accepted. Please make sure the phone service has been canceled before you bring it to the Recycling Drop-Off Center.

Clothing & Shoes -

Clothing and shoes are accepted for all ages, sizes, styles, men and women. Please place these items in a bag(s).

Commingle -

Glass. Clear, brown, and green glass bottles and jars.

Plastic. We accept all numbers of plastics. Please be sure there is a recycling code on the container (typically a triangle with a number inside). Our recycling vendor does not accept plastic buckets, bins, tubs, sliding boards, Tupperware, and other non-numbered or large objects. Please call if you need clarification.

Metal Cans. Aluminum, tin, and other metal cans that many food and sodas come in.

Please note that household items that happen to be made of plastic or glass or metal cannot be accepted (example: window glass, plastic toys, metal car parts).

Electronics* -

Nearly every electronic item you can think of is accepted. Included are computers and all the parts/accessories, printers, fax machines, copiers, televisions, scanners, DVD players, radios, wire, microwaves, and more. There is a charge for most items.

Fluorescent Lights* -

We accept fluorescent tube lights (4 and 8 foot tubes) and bulbs. The lights must be unbroken. There is a charge of $1.00 per light.

Paper -

Copy paper, fax paper, catalogs, magazines, newspapers, junk mail, office paper, shredded paper notebooks, folders, and colored paper are some of the paper types than can be recycled.

Please NO KITCHEN OR BATHROOM PAPER PRODUCTS. Hard cover book paper is acceptable but please remove the hard covers and spine. If you have a large number of textbooks, please call 610-375-2772.

Scrap Metal -

Any type of scrap metal can be dropped off in the scrap metal container. WBCLRC does not pay customers for scrap metal.

Tires* -

Regular whole car and light pick-up truck tires are accepted. There is a charge of $2.00 per tire off the rim, $4.00 per tire if on the rim. Tires must be free of debris and reasonably clean. Cut, halved, or shredded tires are not accepted.

Waste Vegetable Oil -

Need to get rid of oil in the fryer and don’t know how? Bring it here! Some people in our communities collect this waste vegetable oil and use it to power their vehicles. We have a 55 gallon barrel that you can pour the oil into or simply leave your containers here. All containers must have tightly closed lids.
