Environmental Compliance
Complying with the Federal, State and Local environmental standards is part of our everyday
routine. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and other agencies monitors
and inspects all landfills in the state, making sure the business of running a landfill is in balance with
the safeguarding of the environment.
LANDFILL GAS EMISSIONS
As garbage decomposes it naturally produces methane gas.  In conjunction with our 2008 expansion
permit, we upgraded by expanding our methane gas collection system.  We look forward to our
future plans for this system by converting the methane gas into a power source that can be used
around the facility and or sold back to the utility companies.
WATER QUALITY
The natural land and waters surrounding Western Berks Community Landfill and Recycling Center
are tested regularly by outside agencies to make sure the waste being managed daily is secure. We
have over 30 ground water monitoring wells that are checked regularly to make sure water quality is
at its best.
LITTER
Screens, fences, natural buffers and daily hand-grooming keep our facility orderly.
ODOR
We keep odors down by covering garbage daily and by being selective about the waste types we accept.

Garbage happens, pollution doesn’t have to!
